‘Bombay’ removed from 84 state Acts

Sandeep Ashar TNN

Mumbai: Maharashtra on Monday did away with the remnants of its affiliation with the erstwhile Bombay state by changing the names of 84 Acts bearing the word “Bombay”. Sixteen years after the city was renamed Mumbai, the state legislative assembly unanimously approved a bill to remove “Bombay” from the Acts.

As per the legislation, “Bombay” will be replaced with “Maharashtra”. Also, references to “Bombay” or “Greater Bombay” in such Acts or in any other state enactment, rules, regulations, by-laws, schemes, notifications, orders or instruments will be replaced with “Mumbai” or “Brihanmumbai”. The state government has, however, clarified that the context and citations of these Acts will remain unchanged.
