New law schools plan put off

Mumbai: The proposal to set up a National Law University (NLU) in the state on the lines of Bangalore’s National Law School has seen another delay, because of differences between ministers over its location. 
    The initial plan was to set up campuses in the city and Aurangabad, but when the proposal was tabled in the cabinet meeting, there was no mention of Aurangabad. 
    Upset with the move, Congress-NCP ministers from Marathwada and Vidarbha opposed the proposal, said sources. Ministers representing Marathwada said the universities should come up in the city as well as Aurangabad, as was decided by previous chief ministers of the DF government. 
    “We are not against setting up the varsity in Mumbai, but as announced earlier, a campus should be set up in Aurangabad as well,” said a senior minister from Marathwada. 
    In 2007 and 2009, then chief ministers Vilasrao Deshmukh and Ashok Chavan, both from Marathwada, had endorsed the higher and technical education department’s proposal to set up the university in Aurangabad. 
    Following a heated debate, the cabinet left the issue undecided.

State Cabinet to Discuss Plan for 2 New Law Univs.

Mumbai: The state cabinet will on Wednesday discuss proposals for approval to two specialized universities for law studies. Modelled on the lines of the Bangalore-based National Law School, the state higher and technical education department has proposed to set up Mumbai Law University in Uttan and Maharashtra Law University in Aurangabad. If approved, the department plans to initiate admissions to these varsities from the upcoming academic year.
